Ease of use, mess-free operation, and void-free results – a tailored answer to small PCB coating challenges
Auckland, New Zealand – When Frank, Purchasing Manager at NZ Auto, set out to coat their compact PCBA boards, he faced a familiar but confusing choice: which coating method and material would deliver a clean, reliable, and easy-to-use process?
His PCBA boards measure only 58 mm × 58 mm. One side is partially occupied by XH connectors, a button, and a battery connector – components that must be completely avoided during coating. The other side is unobstructed. The boards are delivered in a 4×4 panel (approx. 270 mm square). Above all, Frank demanded ease of use, no mess, and absolutely no pit-holes or voids in the coating.
After evaluating the options, our 4-axis selective conformal coating machine emerged as the ideal fit.

The 4-axis system (X, Y, Z, U) easily navigates around connectors, battery holders, and other sensitive areas. The U-axis can rotate at any angle, eliminating the “shadow effect” on tall components and ensuring sharp, pit-free edges. Equipped with a dual-valve + CCD camera positioning system, the machine supports spray-pattern mirroring and array functions. Programming just one board automatically completes coating for the entire 4×4 panel – delivering high efficiency and outstanding consistency.
To address Frank’s concerns about cleanliness and quality, we recommended UV-curable conformal coating.
“Self-leveling, bubble-free, and void-free – after application, UV coating cures instantly with no need for masking, no solvent evaporation, and no cleaning hassle,” explains our coating specialist. “It’s exactly what ‘no mess and no pit-holes’ means in practice.”

Frank also requested a budget-priced solution including a suitable oven. For UV coatings, a UV-curing oven (LED-UV or microwave-driven) provides second-level curing. Alternatively, an infrared oven can be supplied for thermally cured coatings.
“The options were varied and confusing, but your 4-axis machine and UV coating tick all our boxes – ease of use, cleanliness, and perfect coverage without voids,” says Frank. “We now have a clear path forward.”
